Le jour de la bataille du Fossé, le Prophète (ﷺ) cherchait quelqu’un parmi les gens pour partir en reconnaissance. Az-Zubair s’est porté volontaire. Il a demandé la même chose une deuxième fois, et Az-Zubair s’est encore proposé. Il a répété la demande une troisième fois, et Az-Zubair s’est proposé une nouvelle fois. Le Prophète (ﷺ) a alors dit : « Chaque prophète a un disciple, et mon disciple est Az-Zubair. »
حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ يَقُولُ نَدَبَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم النَّاسَ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ، فَانْتَدَبَ الزُّبَيْرُ، ثُمَّ نَدَبَهُمْ فَانْتَدَبَ الزُّبَيْرُ، ثُمَّ نَدَبَهُمْ فَانْتَدَبَ الزُّبَيْرُ، قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم
" إِنَّ لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ حَوَارِيًّا، وَحَوَارِيَّ الزُّبَيْرُ ". قَالَ سُفْيَانُ الْحَوَارِيُّ النَّاصِرُ.
